AP Moller-Maersk CEO Soren Skou is predicting a whittling down of the containership sector through further mergers in the coming decade.

He told the Financial Times that owners will continue to consolidate, with five or six major players remaining, against 20 two years ago.

The shipping crisis has seen Maersk buy Hamburg Sud, CMA CGM acquire NOL, Hapag-Lloyd merge with CSAV and UASC and Japanese giants NYK, MOL and K Line combine their liner businesses, while Hanjin Shipping went bust and Cosco and China Shipping were united.
