The 4,200–gt coal-fired Badger (built 1953) has been cleared to remain operational in a deal with US environmental authorities.

Operator Lake Michigan Carferry had asked for a new permit after its previous licence expired at the end of 2012. Badger is the last coal-powered vessel on the Lakes.

It will have to install an ash-retention system by the beginning of its 2015 sailing season, however.
