The shipowner failed to seal a tie-up with its domesticrival last year, allowing Hapag to agree a combination with the Chilean line.
But Gast said a three-way merger could yet be anoption.
"I wouldn't rule out that this will make it ontothe agenda at some point in the future," he said at a press conference onTuesday.
