Five 11,000-teu vessels will be built at Hanjin’s HHIC-PHIL yard in the Philippines for delivery throughout 2017. They are costing $467.5m.

The company has fixed 17-year charters with a “leading operator” for the ships.

At the end of the terms, the charterer will buy the units at a price already agreed.

As part of its right of first refusal agreement with Greater China Intermodal Investments (GCI), Seaspan has retained ownership of three of the ships, with GCI acquiring the other two.
