The move follows Iran’s recent seizure of the 5,470-teu containership Maersk Tigris (built 2014) last week.
A Pentagon spokesman said it had begun accompanying British-flagged vessels after talks between Washington and London.
Last week Iranian naval vessels fired warning shots near the Marshall Islands-flagged Maersk Tigris and seized it and its crew.
The ship is said to have been detained based on what Iranian officials have said is a court order related to a commercial dispute.
