Korea Development Bank (KDB) wants to sell restructuring shipbuilder DSME by 2018.
The Asiasis website cited KDB chairman Lee Dong-gul as saying a "quick and drastic decision" would be made about the yard, with disposal as a top priority.
He added the worst-case scenario would see the company needing $4.5bn of funds to continue operations in the current order slump.
DSME has submitted two restructuring plans to its bank creditors since last year and is laying off staff.
