The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has declared its fifth and final option for a GC Rieber Shipping research ship.

The Norwegian owner said that BAS, part of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), will keep the 75-bp Ernest Shackleton (built 1999) from August 2018 to August 2019.

The vessel has been bareboat-chartered to BAS since delivery.

Rieber CEO Christian Berg said: "British Antarctic Survey's declaration of the fifth and final option is a testament to GC Rieber Shipping's ability of designing and developing durable and reliable assets for ice and harsh operational environments"
