The initial contract for the Maersk Gallant is for two years, but with an option to extend for a third.
Maersk said the deal for the ultra harsh environment rig was worth $284m for the firm two-year charter period.
The charter, which will see the rig work in the Norwegian North Sea, is due to begin second quarter of either 2014 or 2015.
