The 221,000-dwt Kuito (built 1979), which worked off Angola, has arrived in Izmir and will be broken up over the next year at the Aliaga shipyard.

Environmentalists objected to the scrapping on the grounds it may have dangerous material inside, but an assessment by a private company contracted by Turkey's atomic agency found it to be free of such waste.

Baran Bozoglu, head of the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), told a press conference: “Once the ship anchors in Aliaga, it will be very difficult to send it back to Angola."
