New York-listed Transocean has revealed Statoil has torn up a charter for an ultra-deepwater drillship.

The 55,000-dwt Discoverer Americas (built 2009) was due to work for the Norwegian major until May next year.

Transocean will now receive an early termination payment "fully compensating the company as provided for in the contract."

It owns or has partial ownership interests in a fleet of, 62 mobile offshore drilling units, consisting of 27 ultra-deepwater floaters, six deepwater floaters, seven harsh-environment semi-submersibles, 12 midwater semi-submersibles, and 10 high-specification jack-ups.
