The US state of Alaska has decided to sell a laid-up veteran ferry.

The Alaska Public website said bids have been invited for the 500-passenger, 7,300–gt Taku (built 1963).

The deadline is 9 May.

The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) stacked the vessel in Ketchikan last June due to budget pressures.

It could no longer afford maintenance.

Taku was first offered to other federal operators, but there were no takers.
