The owners of two containerships that collided off southern Malaysia on Tuesday may have to post a security bond of MYR 1m ($223,500).

The 2,495-teu Wan Hai 301 (built 2001) and the 4,250-dwt APL Denver (built 2008) collided just before midnight on Tuesday off Pasir Gudang Port, Johor spilling an estimated 300t of bunkers.

Malaysian government officials said the bond was to ensure that the shipowners would "take responsibility for the cleaning-up of the oil spill", according to Malaysian news agency Bernama.
