It told the Bombay stock exchange that a memorandum had been signed with an unnamed owner for a 36,000-dwt ship.
In a brief statement, it said the vessel would join the fleet in the current quarter.
But it did not reveal a price.
Mercator already has three MRs, one built in 2000 and the other two in 1993.
