It bought three ferries from the defunct SeaFrance in June 2012 and began to compete with P&O and DFDS/LD Lines in the English Channel.

But a UK competition probe found the service, together with the Channel tunnel itself, could force a competitor out of the market.

It appealed the decision, but lost out last week as the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) recognised the “validity of the case put forward by the group”, but said it was not enough to overturn the ban.
