Yards slashed 3,000 jobs

Figures reveal scale of redundancies at HHI, Samsung and DSME in 2015, with more to come.

South Korea's top three shipyards axed 3,000 jobs in 2015 as they sought to stem losses.

Industry data cited by the Yonhap news agency showed that, including sub-contractors, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), Samsung Heavy Industries and DSME cut 5,000 positions in total.

HHI reduced its workforce by 1,300 and DSME shed 1,400, while a state bail-out agreed last year will see it axe another 10,000 staff from the end of this year.

The three yards are estimated to have logged a combined operating loss of $6.66bn for 2015.
