Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and its newly spun-off affiliates are to spend KRW 3.5 trillion on research and development over the next five years.
The shipbuilding group said it wants to work on new technologies.
HHI itself will spend KRW 2.05 trillion, with the rest allocated to three companies separated off on 1 April as part of the company's restructuring.
The sum includes KRW 400bn to expand its facilities, the group said, according to the Yonhap news agency.
