Provincial authorities have decided to require tankers to have tug escorts to lift oil from the planned expansion of the Westridge Marine Terminal.

And two additional tugs will be purchased for oil spill response.

The conditions were part of this week's approval of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which will deliver crude to the export terminal.

Last month, Canada's federal government approved the Kinder Morgan-backed pipeline, which will triple the volume of crude oil carried from Canada's oil producing province of Alberta to British Columbia.
