Greece’s government has strengthened the role of class societies at the expense of its own bureaucracy, following an embarrassing oil spill off Athens that authorities seem to have handled poorly.
“Responsibility to audit and inspect ships with regards to issuing certificates of seaworthiness is immediately transferred from the inspection department of merchant marine vessels to classification societies,” the office of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in an e-mail.
