Greece deputy shipping minister Nektarios Santorinios has hit back at criticism over the Agia Zoni II clean-up operation.

He told Skai TV that authorities were not too slow to react to the sinking of the 1972-built, 3,200-dwt tanker on 10 September off Salamis island, and the subsequent oil spill that hit Athens beaches.

A floating barrier was deployed within a few hours to contain the oil, he said.
