It has contracted to buy one vessel for delivery in 2017 from Japan Marine United (JMU).

In a filing to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, it said the deal was designed to modernise its fleet.

But it did not reveal a price or size for the ship.

Meiji is listed as operating three VLCCs built between 2005 and 2008, plus aframaxes, products carriers, bulkers, car carriers and LPG tonnage.
