Talk of a canal to bypass the Bosporus strait had gone quiet since president Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced it as part of a general election campaign four years ago.
Erdogan has now called on state bodies to accelerate the project, the Hurriyet daily reported. State institutions are said to be currently working on the exact route of the canal.
Completion of a 50km-long, 120-metre wide waterway was intended for opening in 2013.
