The Canadian government has been urged to introduce ecologically sound policies for Arctic Ocean shipping as traffic increases.

A report from The Pew Charitable Trusts proposes a "comprehensive system of tiered shipping routes that will benefit Canada, the shipping industry and northern communities," AFP reported.

Shipping through the Canadian Northwest Passage is up 166% since 2004 as ice melts and owners seek to save time and money on journeys into Europe and Asia.
