Clarkson’s group financial controller Michael Cahill took the witness stand at the $800m Sovcomflot corruption trial and was immediately asked to give his view on the honesty of his former colleagues.

Prime defendant in the case Yuri Nikitin’s barrister Nathan Pillow individually went through the board of directors at the time of its dealings with Sovcomflot. He asked Cahill of each one, including former finance director Rob Ward, former managing director Richard Fulford-Smith, directors Toby Broke-Smith and Richard Coleman “Do you believe him to be honest?”

In a soft spoken voice Cahill gave an affirmative “yes” to each one.
