Iran’s offer to host a World Maritime Day event this autumn has been rejected because of attacks on commercial shipping, according to the US.

The US and UK opposed Tehran’s hosting of the event in October because it had attacked, harassed, or detained more than 20 ships in the last two years.

The decision to cancel the event, following a vote at the International Maritime Organization’s 40-member council, comes in a period of heightened tensions between the US and Iran.
