A rare period of prosperity for Japanese shipbuilders has not halted the drive towards consolidation as yards continue to develop stronger ties with an eye to mergers.

Re-election of the Shinzo Abe administration in December was welcomed by shipyard managers as his tenure as prime minister has coincided with good times for Japanese builders.

The cheap yen, which has been associated with the “Abenomics” strategy, has given yards a competitive edge over near neighbours and close rivals in China and South Korea.
