Teekay is understood to be the latest in a short but growing list of owners to explore a return to the suezmax newbuilding market.

Teekay is in talks with shipyards in South Korea and China for two firm ships plus two options, industry sources said this week.

“The newbuildings are still at the initial stage,” said one shipbuilding player. “But we understand Teekay wants the contract to include some flexibility as it may want to convert the option vessels into shuttle tankers.”

Spokesmen
