Fuel quality has come back into the spotlight following a decision to lower the global limit on the sulphur content of fuel from 3.5% to 0.5%.
Shipowner’s association Bimco and the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) have warned that the emergence of blended fuels to meet the dramatically lower sulphur requirement could result in an increase in “unstable” fuels and engine breakdowns with obvious safety consequences.
