A deadly explosion inside the 149,235-dwt tanker Aces (built 1982) at the Gadani recycling plant in Pakistan should trigger improvements in unsafe practices, says Lloyd’s Register (LR) shiprecycling manager Jim Heath.

Nobody knows exactly how many lives were lost in last week’s accident at Gadani shipbreaking plot 56, with little monitoring of who was working when the explosion occurred. But 26 people are believed to have died, with more than 50 people injured, many seriously.
