The international regulation of the global recycling industry could soon be a reality after the Indian government said it would ratify an International Maritime Organization (IMO)-agreed convention, putting it onto the road towards its entry into force.

India and Japan made the commitment to ratify the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) following meetings in Tokyo between prime ministers Shinzo Abe and Narendra Modi last week.
