The New Year has just begun and already 2017 is looking much like 2016: more lives have been lost on the dangerous shipbreaking beaches of Gadani in Pakistan. I remember walking along those golden sands 30 years ago, looking in amazement at how such a rudimentary industry could survive in the modern world.
And yet here we are in the 21st century, the age of the Mars Rover spacecraft and self-driving cars, and still men are clambering onto steel ship hulls and hacking them to bits with minimal safety standards.
