Following yet another tragic incident at Pakistan’s beaching yards, the gap in standards at the world’s main ship recycling locations seems to be widening. Let there be no doubt; there can be no excuses for a second fatal fire in as many months on the beaches of Pakistan.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Guidelines for Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling cover simple criteria that all recycling facilities should be adhering to, regardless of their location or method of recycling, to ensure that such tragedies do not occur.
