The principle that freight, demurrage and defence (FD&D) cover is always discretionary is being abandoned by the Shipowners’ Club in its latest move to modernise the protection-and-indemnity (P&I) business.
The move should bring more certainty of cover to shipowners looking to the club for support with an FD&D claim and follows earlier initiatives to move away from other traditional practices of the P&I mutuals.
