The 5,100-gt ship took on an alarming list last April and ended up sitting partially submerged on the bottom of the harbour, becoming the bustling ferry port’s most photographed attraction.

Refloating the ship was perpetually delayed. The excuse given by Greece’s shipping ministry was the transitional period before Cosco took control of the Port of Piraeus.

Now, with its starboard side covered in a thick coat of green slime, the Panagia Tinou is being prepared for towing to the Turkish shipbreaking centre of Aliaga.
