The arrest of Samsung Group’s chief is expected to have little impact on shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).
Shipbuilding players say the detention of Jay Y Lee on suspicion of bribery will not disrupt daily operations at any of Samsung’s companies, as they are run by professional managers. However, it could hamper strategic decision-making. There is talk that Lee has been planning to merge SHI and Samsung Engineering to achieve long-term synergies.
