Olav Leroy was captain of the National Iranian Tanker Co-owned but Norwegian-managed tanker Susangird (built 1973), which was attacked by Iraqi jets off the coast of Iran while heading south from Kharg Island.

This was at the height of the Iran-Iraq war, during which oil exports from Kharg Island continued despite the high risks involved.

A total of 21 crew members lost their lives in the inferno that engulfed the 218,467-dwt Susangird.
