Shipping has a responsibility to catch up with other industries in implementing human rights standards, an Oslo seminar has heard.
David Hammond, chief executive of the UK-based charity Human Rights at Sea, said the industry should adopt the rationale that profit comes from looking after people.
Companies should focus on human rights rather than approaching the issue as a “tick-box exercise”, he told the seminar on exploitation in maritime supply chains hosted by the Mission to Seafarers and Norway’s Rafto Foundation.
