A senior official at the US Coast Guard (USCG) has laid out a schedule for approving the US ballast-water regulation but admits that shipowners could still be left facing more than one regulation.

Jeffrey Lantz, USCG director of commercial regulations and standards, speaking at Nor-Shipping in Norway, said that the USCG is now finalising details.

He adds that officials are “working hard” to keep the US regulation in line with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s Ballast Water Convention (BWC), hinting that the US is not seeking a dramatic departure from international requirements.
