The 26-year-old bulk carrier Iron Antonis, which sank with the feared
loss of 24 lives, was on the classic route for an old ship when she
went down. It was carrying a final cargo of iron ore to China before
heading for demolition in the Philippines.
The operator, Seacoral Maritime Services of Piraeus, which also took the
risk of leaving the ship uninsured, has admitted it sought to get one
extra cargo out of the bulk carrier after it finished a year-long
charter.
