Nearly 1,200 passengers were sent home early last week after their

cruiseship struck an underwater object off Mexico's Caribbean coast.

Seattle-based Holland America Line's Noordam (built 1984) motored on its

own power to the island of Cozumel for inspection, after which it will

sail to Pascagoula, Mississippi, for a dry dock inspection, the company

said.

The accident happened on Thursday, five days into a seven-day cruise, at

Playa del Carmen, about 40 miles (60 km) south of the famous Cancun

resort.
