Dr Torstein Teichert strides into the room looking every inch the German literature academic he first studied to be. With his still youthful looks and retro Ray-Ban “Clubmaster” spectacles, one might expect a quietly delivered synopsis of his thesis on Hamburg author Hubert Fichte, rather than anything more punchy.

As always, first impressions are often mistaken. “Perhaps”, he says with a wry smile on his face, we are currently witnessing “the ‘Chainsaw Massacre’ of ship finance”.
