A new fuelling solution has been put into play with the first orders for vessels which can run on methanol.

Canadian methanol producer Methanex announced this week that its subsidiary Waterfront Shipping will charter in six 50,000-dwt tanker newbuildings that will be fitted with MAN ME-LGI dual-fuel engines that can use methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel or gas oil.

Mitsui OSK Lines is contracting a pair at Minaminippon Shipbuilding in Japan, while Westfal-Larsen Shipping and Marinvest/Skagerack Invest are ordering two each at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea.
