The figures involved may be small and the incidents relatively minor but arguments as to who should pay for expenses incurred when mooring winches onboard a Cosco Hong Kong Shipping bulker allegedly broke down have put the Chinese shipping behemoth’s long-standing relationship with Trafigura in grave jeopardy.

Trafigura Maritime Logistics, the trader’s Singapore-based shipping arm, is demanding that Cosco pay $160,000 for the tugs that had to be employed to hold the 72,400-dwt bulker Fu Kang (built 1997) alongside piers in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Lazaro Cadenas in Mexico early last year.
