The chief engineer at the centre of US prosecutors’ latest bilge dumping case is so far resisting the charges despite a guilty plea from his employer, Marine Managers of Greece.

Matthaios Fafalios, a 64-year-old Greek, “maintains his innocence” in the case, said George Chalos, the Chalos & Co partner representing the engineer.

As TradeWinds reported on its online service last week, Fafalios is accused of ordering a second engineer to use a system known as a “magic pipe” to bypass the oily water separator on the 75,600-dwt Trident Navigator (built 2000), dumping the contents of the bilge tank directly into the sea.
