Yamal LNG partners, South Korean shipbuilder DSME and Russian shipowner SCF Group (Sovcomflot) are understood to have pencilled in a deadline of October for concluding the remaining $1.6bn-worth of contracts for specialised LNG carrier newbuildings to serve the Arctic-based liquefaction project.

But project insiders say the European Union (EU)’s decision this week to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, targeting the country’s finance, energy and defence sectors in the wake of the shooting down of Malaysian airline MH17, is expected to make finalising contracts for the 172,400-cbm Arc7 vessels more difficult.
