Japan’s maritime industry aims to cash in on a major new Japanese government funding initiative intended to develop urban infrastructure and transport development projects abroad.

The money is to be distributed by a new central government agency — which translates from Japanese to the Overseas Transportation and Urban Development Business Support Agency — to be established this autumn.

It is, in part, intended to support third world overseas development but also make up for a shortfall in commercial lending for risky long-term transport projects.
