The Centre for Maritime Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (Cecomap) begins operations on 22 September through a joint initiative with Panama’s larger commercial dispute resolution body.

The partnership will see Cecomap become the maritime arm of the Centre for Conciliation and Arbitration (CeCap), which is backed by the country’s chamber of commerce.

“For the first time in Panama the shipping community will have the chance of arbitrating their disputes or otherwise settle them through alternative methods,” said lawyer Iria Barrancos, president of the Panama Maritime Law Association (Apademar), in a statement provided to TradeWinds.
