The company suspended operations in April following the sinking of its 6,800-gt ropax ferry Sewol (built 1994), which was sailing between Inchon and Cheju Island. A total of 304 passengers and crew died in the incident, the majority of whom were students who had been ordered to stay in their cabins while the ship slowly capsized.

Numerous criminal charges of negligence were subsequently filed against company officials, officers and crew.
