Breakdown of relatively new containership led to collision

A machinery malfunction on a relatively new containership caused it to lose power and led to a major collision, according to a report by marine accident investigators.

The findings of the probe — undertaken jointly by the Antigua and Barbuda flag state and Germany’s Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation (BSU) — will add to industry concerns over the increased frequency of machinery failure in modern newbuildings and the risk of casualty.
