A US judge has rejected an effort to throw out an arbitration award against an affiliate of Argentina’s Antares Naviera in the long-fought legal clash over a 2003 tanker fire and explosion.

District Judge Janet Hall, of the US federal court in Connecticut, also confirmed the nearly $2.9m award, giving it the weight of a court judgment in favour of Cabot, the Boston chemicals company whose Indonesian affiliate had the 37,300-dwt tanker San Sebastian (built 1981) on charter when the casualty happened.
