The mini-resurgence in demand for panamax boxships may be coming to an end, with plans by G6 lines to merge services between Asia and the US East Coast (USEC).

Panamax rates have enjoyed a mini-boom in recent months, as highlighted by a spate of fixtures at over $10,000 per day.

Larger panamaxes have performed even better, with the 5,089-teu Wehr Hong Kong (built 2006) taken by NYK for six to nine months at $11,400 per day, so setting a new benchmark for this size of ship.

The
